Lack of a knowledge of English seen as stalling local IT professionals

Lack of a knowledge of English and a paucity of basic soft skills are two major drawbacks for Sri Lanka professionals/graduates to rise in the IT profession, a specialist IT training manager said

  • Sri Lankan graduates/professionals have all other skills but they are not competent with the English knowledge and other soft skills to get into top global companies, where there are so many employment opportunities, Managing Partner of Sri Lanka's pioneer in Red Hat training and certification, OpenED, Russell Kerkoven told The Island Financial Review in an exclusive interview.

  • He said Red Hat is the world's leading provider of open source enterprise IT solutions. Over two decades ago RED Hat had a vision for developing software differently.

  • We believed that collaboration with an ecosystem of IT leaders, open source advocates, developers, and partners could create a better foundation for the future of IT—Red Hat® Enterprise Linux.

  • Today, Red Hat delivers a comprehensive portfolio of secure products and services using the same open, collaborative business model and an affordable, predictable subscription model. These include Cloud Computing, Middleware, Operating system, Storage, Virtualization and Mobile Applications, he said.

  • "Since 2011 OpenED has produced 10 Red Hat architects who have the highest certification offered by Red Hat, and over 400 administrators and engineers, Kerkoven explained."

  • On the occasion of Red Hat’s 25th anniversary and OpenEd’s fifth anniversary, the company is securing the services of Red Hat certified trainers from India to conduct a series of Red Hat programmes, commencing in October.

  • This will build capacity among the Sri Lankan IT practitioners, network engineers and cloud specialists with the introduction of programmes like Ansible and Puppet, Kerkoven added.
